Frequently Asked Questions:
Do you accept new members year-round?
Yes. New members are welcome to join at any time during the season.
What instruments can my child learn?
We teach the Great Highland Bagpipes and Scottish drumming, including Snare, Tenor, and Bass Drum.
What does a beginner need to get started?
Pipers require a practice chanter, which typically costs around $60. We are happy to help families choose the right one. Drummers do not need any equipment to start. A drum practice pad is provided by the band.
Are uniforms and instruments provided?
Uniforms are loaned by the band. A refundable deposit may be required.
Once my child is ready for the full bagpipes, do we need to purchase a set?
Not right away. When a piper is ready to progress, we assist families with instrument loaners (when available) through the intermediate stage of piping. Once in the competition band we do expect our pipers to have their own instruments. Our instructors are available to help with purchasing options to ensure the best fit and value. Drums are provided by the band for drummers at all levels.
How much does it cost?
The annual membership fee is $500 per child. The second child (family rate) is $400 and the third child is $300. There may be occasional additional equipment rental costs. We work hard to keep the program affordable through fundraising and grants.
What performance opportunities are available?
Members perform at community events, parades, and concerts. At the competitive level, players may also participate in competitions across Alberta and Canada.
How much home practice is expected?
Regular weekly practice helps players progress steadily. Instructors provide clear guidance and age-appropriate practice goals for each skill level.
How do players progress through the band?
Players move from Beginner to Intermediate to Competition Band based on individual skill development and readiness, as assessed by instructors.
Do parents need to be involved?
As a not-for-profit organization, we rely on the support of parent volunteers. Opportunities include executive roles, fundraising, social media, event coordination, and other areas based on interest and availability.
Are you affiliated with a church or religious organization?
No. We are a non-profit youth music organization and are not affiliated with any church or religious group. We rent our practice space at a local United Church, which we value for its welcoming environment and excellent facilities. Members of all backgrounds are welcome.
How do we join?
Families can register using the registration form on our website. If you would like to learn more first, you are welcome to visit a practice or contact us through our Contact Us page. We are happy to help you get started.
Do you book performances?
Yes. Please contact us for performance availability and booking details.
